The Doctoral Program in Biomedical Sciences provides advanced, multi- and interdisciplinary training in biomedical science designed to convey solid research and communication skills at high levels of scientific and ethical standards. Students receive orientation by a tutoring committee throughout their studies as they build their knowledge base and design their thesis project. This cycle of studies follows European frameworks for training a generation of top-notch researchers who will be fundamental in forging links between quality higher education and scientific research. The first year of the degree can be found by consulting the Curricular Plan. It is composed of advanced elective courses in addition to participation and monitoring in scientific projects (to be chosen from amongst an annually updated offering). These experiences provide a carefully planned educational environment that is modern and subject to continual upgrading so as to guarantee the best possible preparation of students for independent and original research in a chosen specialisation (or interdisciplinary area). In addition to scientific training and skill development, students will be coached to understand the application and the practical feasibility of applying their expertise within a professional arena. This 3rd cycle is thus intended to furnish students with the best possible research abilities and to enable them to apply these skills profitably within the field of Biomedical Science.
The doctoral degree in Biomedical Science is a four-year (8 semester) programme comprising 240 ECTS. It was accredited by A3ES (NCE) on 31-07-2014, under DGES registration nº R/A-Cr 131/2014. This is a 3rd cycle Upper Educational degree leading to the acquisition of a Doctoral Degree - ISCED Level 6.
Applicants must have a) a master’s degree or the legal equivalent in a field of biology, biomedicine or health and b) academic, scientific, or professional experience that is judged to be sufficient proof of their ability to meet the requirements of this cycle of studies by the appropriate and legally competent scientific body.
This cycle of studies provides professionals with: a) broad-based knowledge of biomedical science; b) training in advanced techniques and methods for biological research across the gamut of the health fields; c) the ability to conceptualise, plan, adapt, carry out and manage health science research; d) the ability to carry out original investigation prepared to undergo the peer review process; e) the capacity for critical analysis and the evaluation and synthesis of new and complex ideas; f) the facility for disseminating research findings regarding their specialisation to specialist and lay audiences; and g) the means to enhance technological social and/or cultural progress within their area of specialisation.
