The master’s program in Physiotherapy, designed in accordance with the principles of Bologna and therefore planned in accordance with the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS), comprises 4 semesters totaling 120 ECTS: 105 ECTS in the scientific area of Physical Therapy, 10 ECTS in the scientific area of Biostatistics and 5 in the scientific area of Functional Sciences.
At the end of the first semester, students choose one of four offered areas of specialization:
- Specialization in Manual Therapy and Sports;
- Specialization in Cervical and Temporomandibular Dysfunctions;
- Specialization in Neurology;
- Specialization in Cardiorespiratory.
In the second year (third and fourth semesters), students complete an Internship or Dissertation, fundamental components for the acquisition of true professional experience in the specific area they are applying to. Students present the results of this experience in a Report/Dissertation to be defended before a jury of professors/researchers who are recognized in their area of specialization.

Polytechnic higher education_master’s_2nd cycle of studies leading to a master’s degree_Level 7 of the National and European Qualifications Framework.
This 2nd cycle course of study leading to a master’s degree is open to students who: a) Hold a bachelor’s or legally equivalent degree; b) Hold a foreign higher education degree that is recognized by the statutorily competent scientific body of the Institute to satisfy the objectives of the bachelor's degree; c) Hold an academic, scientific or professional curriculum that is recognized by the statutorily competent scientific body of the Institute to be demonstrative of the student's capacity to complete this cycle of studies.
Being a program of a professionalizing nature, the master's in Physical Therapy organized by the Superior School of Health of Vale do Sousa of the Polytechnic Health Institute of the North (Escola Superior de Saúde do Vale do Sousa do Instituto Politécnico de Saúde do Norte) seeks to train professionals specialized in different areas of physical therapy intervention. The course ensures the development of relational and manual skills, allowing professionals to take on more complex clinical problems and to have greater professional autonomy. This master’s program aims to instill a critical spirit in students, such that they seek to practice in a manner based in scientific evidence and, in this way, contribute towards improved physical therapy treatment.
