About the program/cycle of studies

The 1st Cycle of Studies in Biomedical Sciences of the University Institute of Health Sciences (IUCS-CESPU) provides students with a broad and deep knowledge of human anatomy that makes it a competitive professional in several modern areas of research and development of the biological and molecular and cellular medicine areas.

The Curricular Plan allows a basic medical education, in its theoretical and practical aspects, complemented by areas that train students for the critical analysis and the development of laboratory research work. It is worth mentioning the existence of practical or laboratory classes during the 3 years of the Cycle of Studies and the possibility of the student to be included in extracurricular internships in scientific projects taking place internally at IUCS-CESPU.

Professionals in Biomedicine will master the interface areas between Medicine and Biological Sciences, which will allow them to collaborate with the medical and scientific community in fundamental and applied biomedical research programs, and in areas of diagnosis and therapeutics with biomedical intervention.

The 1st Cycle of Studies in Biomedical Sciences fulfils the need not only to train graduates in an area in remarkable expansion and development, but also to contribute to the scientific and technological development of Medicine.

 

Recognition

The 1st Cycle of Studies in Biomedical Sciences allows students to build up careers in areas of health, research and higher education. They are able to collaborate with the medical and scientific community in fundamental and applied (diagnosis and therapy) biomedical research programs; can work in clinical and forensic units; as researchers in centres of biological and medical research companies; in biomedical products companies and; in promotion of science or education. The biomedical training can be complemented and developed in 2nd Cycles of Studies such as Molecular Therapies, Biotechnology, Clinical Analysis and Bio-Entrepreneurship or in 3rd Cycle of Studies fully adapted to the knowledge and to the development of Biomedical competences, such as in Biological Sciences Applied to Health of the IUCS. Particular specializations can be acquired at the Integrated Masters such as Pharmaceutical Sciences, Dentistry or Medicine, since the broad training of the Biomedical professional is easily recognized in these courses. Noteworthy is the protocol with the University Alfonso X El Sabio (UAX), of Madrid, which allows finalists of this 1st Cycle of Studies, fulfilling the access requirements of the protocol, to apply for positions in the 4th  academic year of the Integrated Master in Medicine at UAX

 

Academic Degree

Course accredited by A3ES (NCE) on 10-05-2010 for 5 years; Registry by DGES no. R/A-Cr 14/2010; University Education - 1st cycle of studies leading to a Bachelor's degree.

 

Entry requirements

International applicants for admission and enrolment in the Bachelor's degree and Integrated Masters, must:

  • hold a qualification granting them access to higher education, such as a diploma or certificate issued by a competent authority, which attests to the successful completion of an educational program, and authorises them to apply for and enrol in higher education in the country where it was conferred; or
  • hold a secondary education degree legally equivalent to the Portuguese secondary education.


Under the regulations for international students, candidates must take an exam at CESPU. (Decree-Law no. 36/2014)
