About the program/cycle of studies

The Degree in Medical Image and Radiotherapy (MIR) has a duration of 4 academic years (8 semesters), with a total of 240 ECTS. It aims to train professionals with knowledge, skills and competences for an excellent professional performance, namely within the scope of the activities carried out in the different imaging and therapeutic areas of Radiology, Nuclear Medicine and Radiotherapy. This cycle of studies gives access to the profession similar to that registered in other European countries (corresponding to Level 6 of the European Qualifications Framework), which enables professionals to practice both in Europe and in other countries around the world.


This cycle of studies is taught at Escola Superior de Saúde do Vale do Ave and it is structured with different types Curricular Units, such as biannual or annual and there are, also, theorical, theoretical-practical, laboratory training and clinical teaching Curricular Units.
Theoretical teaching and clinical teaching are articulated with one another, so that the latter develops as closely as possible to the correspondent theoretical component.


This Degree grants and confers competence to future graduates with high knowledge in protection against ionizing radiation, dosimetry and quality control. These professionals are able to perform functions in all areas of Medical Image, such as Conventional Radiology, Computed Tomography (CT), Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), Mammography, Osteodensitometry, Scintigraphy Studies, Positron Emission Tomography (PET) and hybrid imaging (PET-CT and PET-MRI). Thus, it participates in a multidisciplinary team regarding the identification, evaluation and monitoring of different pathologies (such as oncological, infectious and/or degenerative diseases).


The Medical Image and Radiotherapy professional also takes part in planning and administration of radiation for the treatment of oncological patients, namely by means of applying Radiotherapy techniques. In addition to the diagnosis in this area, the professional is able to intervene in terms of prevention, health promotion, therapy research, management and teaching.

Type of recognition

Under the terms of Order No. 9408/2014, the degree in Medical Imaging and Radiotherapy qualifies for the exercise of the professions of: a) Nuclear medicine technician; b) Radiology technician; c) Radiotherapy technician. The Medical Imaging and Radiotherapy professional also works in the planning and administration of radiation for the treatment of cancer patients, namely through the application of radiotherapy techniques. In addition to the diagnosis area, it intervenes in terms of prevention, health promotion, therapy, research, management and teaching. These professionals can exercise their activity in public and private hospitals, clinical centers, health centers, laboratories and teaching and research centers and develop consultancy in insurance entities and companies that sell hospital equipment.

 

Entry requirements

INTERNATIONAL STUDENT REGIME

Applies to all candidates who do not hold citizenship /relatives of any country that is a Member State of the European Union; or have not been legal residents in Portugal for more than two years.

Requirements:

  • Completed secondary school;
  • Document certifying that the candidate has a national exam of Biology in is education system with the minimum mark of approved in order to substitute our national access exam of Biologia e Geologia, and the respective contents, or take the exam in CESPU

STUDENTS WITH EUROPEAN NATIONALITY

Application Regimes:

General Access: Students who hold a foreign secondary diploma legally equivalent to the Portuguese secondary education. The Portuguese admission exams can be replaced by the equivalent final exams or school-leaving exams required for each degree, duly recognized DGES (Artigo 20º do Decreto-Lei n.º 296-A/98)1.

+23 years old Regime: Students aged over 23 can be admitted to higher education if they successfully completed the special entrance examination that evaluates the capacity to attend higher education courses at CESPU educational establishments, according to the law (DL 64/2006 de 21 de março, alterado pelo Decreto-Lei n.º 113/2014, de 16-07)

 Changing of Course/Institution: Is the act by which a student applies to the same or a different degree from that of the last registration, in the same or in a different institution of higher education, whether or not there was an interruption of the registration in accordance with the Portaria n.º 181-D/2015,  19 of June.

Holder of a Degree: Holders of a Bachelor, master or doctor degree obtained in national or foreign higher education institutions, as long as recognized by Decree law nº66 / 2018  (Decreto-Lei n.º 113/2014, de 16-07)
