Sports Podiatry is a speciality of Podiatry that includes the study, prevention, diagnosis and treatment of alterations and pathologies in the lower limbs and the foot during physical activity and sport, as well as the respective repercussions in the locomotor system and human movement. The Master’s in Sports Podiatry whose curriculum was published in the 2nd séries of the Diário da República, nº 161, on 21 August of 2012, notification nº 11177/2012,aims to provide the knowledge, attitudes and skills required for professionals to carry out their duties with professionalism, autonomy and responsibility, respecting the legal and ethical guidelines that are inherent to their profession in clinical-sports contexts. These professionals will be prepared to carry out their practice either independently or as part of a multidisciplinary team in the areas of physical activity and sport. They will also work preventively: clinical and biomechanical evaluation of the foot and lower limbs of the athlete; diagnosing pathologies or morphological alterations and/or in the use of lower limbs and the foot; planning, implementing, monitoring and evaluating programmes of education and training in the area of exercise and sports podiatry, aimed at the general public, institutions, at risk groups and athletes.
This cycle of studies is aimed at exercise health professionals and bachelor’s degree holders interested in working in the field. It provides specialized training, both theoretical and practical, that complements their basic studies, enabling them to update their know-how in Podiatry, including those aspects related to the foot of athletes. It intends to fill in existing gaps in necessary professional knowledge whilst also providing professional specialization to complement the technical skills with new concepts and work methods that will benefit the development of Podiatry.

Applicants to a 2nd cycle of studies leading to a Master's Degree must: a) hold a Bachelor's Degree or a legal equivalent; b) hold a foreign academic degree that is considered to meet the criteria of the Bachelor's degree by the Scientific Committee of the institution of higher education they are applying to; c) have an academic, scientific, or professional curriculum that is judged to be sufficient proof of their ability to meet the requirements of this cycle of studies by the Scientific Committee of the institution of higher education they are applying to.
