About the program/cycle of studies

Holders of a Bachelor’s degree in Clinical Physiology are prepared to carry out their professional duties as cardiopneumology and neurophysiology technicians in an independent and autonomous fashion. They can work autonomously in multi-disciplinary teams in areas ranging from morphofunctional assessments, to dealing with physiopathologies of the heart, blood vessels or lungs, as well as monitoring of bioelectric activity within the central and peripheral nervous systems.

The Bachelor’s Degree in Clinical Physiology provides the necessary knowledge, skills and preparedness for professional activity according to Portuguese legislation, as well as maintaining and /or improving their job functions, duties and responsibilities.

Holders of a Bachelor’s degree in Clinical Physiology must acquire the relevant knowledge that will enable them to carry out their professional duties within the fields of physiology and anatomical physiopathology, particularly as applied within the cardiovascular respiratory and neurological systems. They should also have full command of the biology, chemistry, physics and mathematics that underlie their professional practice. They should be knowledgeable of the technology as well as the clinical and experimental instrumentation appropriate to the processes within their sphere of activity as well as the standards of quality control and safety regarding the equipment and clinical installations.

The degree holder in Clinical Physiology must demonstrate advanced skills and technical preparation that reveals the command and innovative capacity necessary to resolve the complex issues in their area of intervention: studies of the cardiovascular system, as well as assessments of the vascular, neurophysiological, sleep, brain perfusion and cardiovascular functions. Their tests can be applied equally to gastroenterological and nephrology functions as well. These professionals should also be able to identify and to diagnosis physiopathologies in their field and suggest necessary treatment. They must understand the principles behind these treatments and be able to provide health training. They must also provide their services and resources efficiently, in a safe manner. They must be fully familiar with sources of medical information. They have to supervise technical and scientific techniques in order to identify abnormalities and to adopt corrective procedures when adequate, making decisions and taking part in the decision of colleagues.

The degree holder in Clinical Physiology must have be capable of respecting the rights, dignity and autonomy of users, following the codes of conduct and regulations. They must be able to communicate appropriately and to work well in multidisciplinary groups where they can ensure the necessary quality and safety of their intervention. They also have to be aware of the limits of their professional practice. They must keep themselves up-to-date scientifically and technologically and maintain their critical abilities fully engaged. They must be able to create, set up and carry out scientific research with appropriate instruments whilst carrying out their professional duties impartially.

The Bachelor’s Degree in Clinical Physiology lasts four years (8 semesters) and comprises 240 ECTS.

This degree was accredited by A3ES on 11/02/2015 and is was registered by DGES on 03/03/2015 with nº R/A - CR 4/2015.

Type of recognition

Holders of Bachelor Degrees in Clinical Physiology can carry out professional duties as Cardiopneumologists and/Neurophysiologists in accordance with Order nº 9363/2014 of July 10, 2014. - (professional recognition of the First Cycle Degree in Clinical Physiology that aims to provide joint training for technicians of Cardiopneumology and Neurophysiology). These degree holders in Clinical Physiology can carry out professional duties in public or private hospitals, in diagnostic or therapeutic installations, health centres, medical clinics, sports medicine clinics, gymnasia or sports clubs, the hospital equipment industry (marketing and sales), medical emergency services, insurance companies or carrying out scientific investigation. 

 

Entry requirements

Admission into the degree programme can either be gained by successful completion of the national admissions process, by way of ad hoc application processes, or through special admission schemes or as a result of course changes, transfers or readmissions. Applicants via the national admissions process must meet all requirements stipulated in point 8 of the Diploma Supplement.
