Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology

Major interests

At the present time, the field of Dental Sciences has great interest in investigating the causes of various diseases involving the oral structures of the teeth, in a goal to improve treatment, prevention and control of the patient. Our research activities aim at:

1. Analysing the expression of cell cycle control genes in oral carcinogenesis and characterizing odontogenic keratocystic tumors;
2. Charactarizing the periodontal disease and infectious agents;
3. Designing a new oral scale in patients with dental infection;
4. Assessing the levels of pro-inflammatory markers in subjects with periodontitis;
5. Improving systems of obturation for endodontic treatment, sealing of the root canal walls, and also techniques of bleaching.

To achieve these goals, we are using (respectively):

1. Biopsies of the oral cavity, histopathological diagnosis, tissue microarrays, immunohistochemistry, in situ hybridization and assessment of apoptosis by TUNEL method;
2. Microscopical examination with specific dye techniques, conventional culture methods, molecular techniques, such as PCR and Real Time-PCR, as well as antibiotic susceptibility test in order to identify the periodontopathogenic agents;
3. Detection of bacterial plate, calculus, gingival inflammation periodontal pockets and dental mobility through the use of different hygiene and periodontal indices to be applied in all teeth of the clinical patients;
4. Characterization of the levels of pro-inflammatory markers (IL-1β, IL-6 and TNF-α) in GCF and saliva before and after treatment, through a multiplex bead immunoassay;
5. Differents systems of obturation: guttapercha and AH Plus, Resilon/RealSeal System and Guttaflow to monorradiculares teeths. For this, Pro-Root MTA® (Dentsply Maillefer), confocal laser scanning microscopy, scanning electron microscopy are used. The canals instrumented with Protaper system (Dentsply Maillefer, Switzerland), followed by hand instrumentation .For bleaching, we are testing, over time, different concentrations of Hydrogen peroxide.
