About the program/cycle of studies

The Bachelor’s degree in Oral Hygiene functions in accordance with the Bologna process. It takes 3 academic years (6 semesters) and is made up of 180 ECTS, as stipulated by notification nº 9350/2012 of 02 July in the 2nd series of the Diário de Repúblico nº 131 of 09 July 2012.

This cycle of studies prepares students to meet current European standards established for the profession enabling graduates to move easily into the job market. Training is highly practical, without neglecting the basic scientific foundation, namely regarding anatomy, physiology and histology, amongst others. Dental Hygiene degree holders will be prepared to promote oral health amongst a wide range of age levels, both in healthy patients and those with special needs in order to prevent oral pathology. They are prepared to join teams and contribute to programmes planning oral health.

Type of recognition

The practice of Oral Hygiene is regulated by Decree-Law nº 320 of 11 August 1999 and n.º 564 of 21 December 1999. These provide the framework for the practice by diagnostic and therapeutic technicians. These professionals can work in health facilities, in education and educational and research institutions, dental clinics or private practices, hospitals, nursing homes, schools, crèches or pre-schools, or in the dental products industry.

  

Entry requirements

International applicants for admission and enrolment in the Bachelor's degree and Integrated Master’s must:

  • hold a qualification granting them access to higher education, such as a diploma or certificate issued by a competent authority which attests to the successful completion of an educational program and authorises them to apply for and enrol in higher education in the country where it was conferred; or
  • hold a secondary education degree legally equivalent to the Portuguese secondary education.


Under the regulations for international students, candidates must take an exam at CESPU (Decree-Law no. 36/2014).
