Message from the President
The CESPU Group originated with C.E.S.P.U., Advanced Polytechnic and University Cooperative, CRL, which was founded in Porto in 1982 with the objective of promoting higher education in the area(s) of health sciences.
After 25 years of existence, the history of this cooperative may be characterised by its pioneering spirit, innovation, sustained growth, loyalty to the principle of specialisation, the internationalisation of European vocational education, its strong component of social and humanitarian assistance through the provision of health services to the communities where it is located and the search for global quality.
C.E.S.P.U., CRL is the founding entity of the Instituto Superior de Ciências da Saúde – Norte (Advanced Institute of Health Sciences – North), which offers university courses, and the Instituto Politécnico de Saúde do Norte (Polytechnic Health Institute of the North), which includes both the Escola Superior de Saúde do Vale do Ave (Vale do Ave Higher School of Health) and the Escola Superior de Saúde do Vale do Sousa (Vale do Sousa Higher School of Health), with an overall enrolment of nearly 3200 students. Through its educational establishments, it currently offers one baccalaureate, nineteen undergraduate degrees, seven master’s degrees and nine specialty degrees, all in the health sciences domain, counting with the service of a total of 518 differentiated professionals.
In developing a vertical integration strategy, eleven companies were created or acquired, highlighting: C.E.S.P.U. Formação (Training), S.A., C.E.S.P.U. - Serviços de Saúde (Health Services), S.A.,Imagem e Diagnóstico Nova Saúde (Nova Saúde Imaging and Diagnostic) - A.C.E. and SOIBSA (Iberian Health Society) - S.G.P.S.
The main objective of these companies includes the development of lifelong learning activities and professional training at different levels, the management of health care units including hospitals, clinics and diagnostic centres, with emphasis on the share capital participation of two hospitals and the opening of several clinical and laboratory units equipped with sophisticated technology and engaged in the sale of health equipment and materials.
Since its inception, internalisation has influenced the life of the institution, as seen in the partnership forged with the University of Barcelona and other European institutions, and the establishment of the “European Foundation for Health Sciences and Technology”, whose main objective is scientific research. Within this context, the CESPU award was created reflecting the theme “A Contribution to the Research and Development of Health Sciences and Technology”, a prize of considerable monetary value.
As a result of the development strategy adopted, C.E.S.P.U., CRL and associated companies currently comprise a Group which has a diversified range of intervention in the health sector and considerable social impact.
In order to optimise and standardise the procedures inherent to C.E.S.P.U., CRL and its companies’ operations, a certification process under NP EN ISO 9001:2000 was completed at the end of 2006 (“Quality Management System"). With this measure, the goal is to reach new standards of quality and excellence in the management of higher education and the provision of health services in Portugal.
