History
It was born in 1982, under the plan to promote scientific research and its expansion at the university level. This year commemorates its 25th anniversary, based on strong foundations but looking toward the future. The following are registers of CESPU’s historical landmarks.

(Escola Superior de Saúde do Vale do Ave / Vale do Ave Higher School of Health)1982 – The founding of CESPU, CRL
CESPU – Advanced Polytechnic and University Cooperative - was founded in Porto with the objective of creating establishments for higher, university and polytechnic education, as well as promoting scientific research and the development of services provided to the community.
1984 – The beginning of the Advanced Institutes of Dental Sciences
CESPU began its participation in the higher education sector with the implementation of the Advanced Institute of Dental Sciences – Porto and the Advanced Institute of Dental Sciences – Lisbon, the first private educational establishments in Portugal to offer degrees in Dental Medicine.
1993 – Introduction of new degrees and new names
With the increase of its educational offerings through the creation of new degrees, namely in Clinical Psychology and the Pharmaceutical Sciences, the Advanced Institutes of Dental Sciences in Porto and Lisbon are renamed the Advanced Institute of Health Sciences – North and the Advanced Institute of Health Sciences – South, respectively.
1995 – New facilities
As a result of its growth, CESPU transferred the Advanced Institute of Health Sciences – North to the centre of Porto, to the new facilities located on the university campus of Gandra.
1997 – Partial split of the cooperative
In order to make the Advanced Institute of Health Sciences – South autonomous, a new founding entity was created for this educational establishment, through a partial split process.
1997 – The creation of the Higher Schools of Health
Giving form to a new organisational model whereby the beneficial gains are based on the institution’s significant expertise and the integrated management of its resources, CESPU created the Escola Superior de Saúde do Vale do Ave (Vale do Ave Higher School of Health) in Vila Nova de Famalicão, and the Escola Superior de Saúde do Vale do Sousa (Vale do Sousa Higher School of Health), in Gandra. Anticipating the interactivity between the various professional areas, these schools teach a range of higher polytechnic courses in the different areas of science and health technology, giving relevance, in addition to solid theoretical training, to the models of learning in real work environments.
1999 – The creation of the Instituto Politécnico de Saúde do Norte (Polytechnic Health Institute of the North)
The first polytechnic institute was created which, in addition to its broad regional intervention in the north, has the core subject of health as the common denominator in all of its degrees. This institute currently includes the Escolas Superiores de Saúde do Vale do Ave and of Vale do Sousa (Vale do Ave and Vale do Sousa Higher Schools of Health).
2001 - CESPU - Formação (Training) and CESPU - Serviços de Saúde (Health Services) are established as companies
In developing its strategy of vertical integration, CESPU created two new companies: CESPU - Serviços de Saúde (Health Services), SA and CESPU – Formação (Training) SA, to ensure the management and development of units which provide health care, in the first case, and continuing and postgraduate education in the second case.
2002 – The beginning of the implementation of the Quality Management System
In order to optimise and standardise the procedures inherent to the C.E.S.P.U. Group and its companies’ operations, the implementation of a Quality Management System was begun, in accordance with NP EN ISO 9001:2000.
2003 – The creation of SOIBSA, SGPS, Lda.
The Iberian Health Society is the entity which manages the holdings in companies engaged in the import and sale of health equipment and materials. This company develops its commercial activity within the Iberian market.
2004 – The establishment of the International Research Award
Within the scope of promoting scientific research, the cooperative created and attributed, for the first time, the “CESPU Award – A Contribution to the Development of Sciences and Health Technology”, as an international prize. Coinciding with the commemoration of CESPU’s 25th anniversary, the second edition of the award was issued in 2007.
2006 – Expansion to Angola
CESPU announces its plan to expand to the African continent, particularly Angola, through participation with the University of Benguela and partnership with the UMA.
2007 - 25 years teaching Health
Recognising the cooperative’s efforts in ensuring the quality of education provided namely through the degree of student and teacher satisfaction, CESPU has become a pioneer in the field of Portuguese higher education by obtaining overall certification of the founding entity and its educational establishments, in accordance with ISSO 9001:2000.
