Pathological, Cytological and Tanatological Anatomy

It allowed me to enter health care in the laboratorial field and the teaching profession.

Fernanda Garcez

It promoted my growth on a personal and professional level, establishing the adaptive means which are necessary and fundamental for entering the workforce.

Physiotherapy

Being a Physiotherapy professor is a privilege and fills me with pride, because it allows me to participate in the training of future colleagues in a profession which, if properly exercised, is extremely beautiful and rewarding. It is wonderful getting to know the students in their first year, to follow their journey throughout the four years of their course and to observe the growing pains of their evolution not only at an academic and professional level, but human and social as well.

Nuno Nogueira, associate professor in the Department of Physiotherapy at the Escola Superior de Saúde do Vale do Sousa (Vale do Sousa Higher School of Health)

The institution’s initiative in creating a space for the dissemination of opinions on their site is commendable, as it allows for increased growth and contributes to improvements in the field of health, which is our main goal. As a former student of this institution, I would like to emphasise the quality of the facilities and, most importantly, that of the human resources who provided the education and training necessary for my insertion in the community/workforce. I shall also highlight the excellent quality of their internships, which provided a good transition between the theoretical component (so well-taught by the professors of the institution) and the practical component. It was here that I grew as a health care professional, with the goal of improving the quality of life of those who need our services.

Podiatry

During their cycle of higher education, students of Podiatry are exposed to an education which is the first of its kind and unique in Portugal. Their academic training during the first two years is universal in nature in the field of health sciences, while simultaneously integrating laboratorial and pre-clinical techniques. During the last two years, they are exposed to specialisation in the various clinical aspects of podiatry at the theoretical and practical level, through direct contact with the patient. The academic training involved in the Podiatry course relies on its own specialised faculty body and a group of professors from the University of Barcelona. The internship in Podiatry allows students to have direct contact with the patient in a real work environment. The internship is conducted at specialised clinics belonging to the cooperative and hospital units, allowing these professionals the chance to evaluate the patient, prepare the diagnosis and implement the treatment plan with due professional autonomy. At the moment, it is one of the courses in the field of science and health technology with the highest employability rate, taking into account the needs imposed by society and by the newness of the course in Portugal. The desire and hunger for action and involvement in the field of health, with technical and clinical autonomy, can be practised in the realm of foot health through the obtainment of an undergraduate degree in Podiatry.

Cardiopneumology

The course plan is well prepared, satisfying the requirements associated with the training activity of cardiopneumology technicians; the quality of the professors and the practical training methods are adequate and there is obvious concern that they be updated continuously. The demand that superior levels of professional capabilities and competence be demonstrated is a goal of the institution.

António Braga
Professor at ESSVA

The information and training I received at ESSVA, complemented by the professional internships, were excellent and broad enough for my insertion and practise in the profession.

Mónica Teixeira - former student at ESSVA

Clinical Analyses and Public Health

As a former student (1998-2002) and currently working in the same field as my degree, I believe that the four years spent at IPSN-ESSVA were an important foundation for my professional life. I would like to emphasise the quality and commitment of the professors and the academic spirit which exists in this institution. I am proud to see IPSN-ESSVA grow and train more and more qualified professionals.

Susete Casimiro
Graduated in 2002

When I began taking my degree (2001), IPSN-ESSVA was still relatively new. Temporary facilities were being used which had little to do with the quality of education they were offering. Gradually they grew and nowadays, there is an equal relationship between the quality of the facilities and the education provided in this establishment. I am familiar with the truth of these facts, given that I accompanied and lived through IPSN-ESSVA’s two stages. It evolved and continues to grow. The objectives attained in the various aspects in which it operates in the city is proof of this, as they continuously seek to respond to more and more goals and the needs of those they serve. I completed my degree two years ago and my relationship with this institution is still very much alive, therefore, one shouldn’t just live the spirit of IPSN-ESSVA while studying there, but rather live it as a source of continuous education and community. A thank you to all, for the services provided! Make the most of it, as it is always good to have enriching experiences like mine.

Vitor Cunha
Graduated in 2005

As a former student of the Escola Superior de Saúde do Vale do Ave – ESSVA (Vale do Ave Higher School of Health), I must say that I am proud and honoured to have undertaken my academic higher education at such an excellent school. I received an undergraduate degree in Clinical Analyses and Public Health in 2004, when I had just started my professional career at the Unidade Local de Saúde de Matosinhos (Local Health Care Unit in Matosinhos). At the moment I work at the Centro de Biologia Molecular do Hospital S. João (Centre for Molecular Biology at S. João Hospital). Professionally, I feel very satisfied and therefore want to take the opportunity to express my appreciation to all those who made my training possible, especially to all the institution’s staff for their pedagogical capabilities and to all my colleagues and friends, and moreover, for the excellent environment which I found myself in. I even had the pleasure of procuring my degree in the new facilities and would like to emphasise the evolution that this institution underwent over time. It is a modern school and has the resources necessary for the level of education it offers, therefore allowing the student to enter the workforce with all the necessary skills, and ethical and scientific know-how which is so valuable nowadays. A thank you to all.

Nursing

Turning back the clock... this is the phrase that sums up what I feel when I recall the four years I spent at ESSVA procuring a degree in Nursing.
They were four years that passed quickly, as time seems to fly when we do something we enjoy; and the truth is that I didn't just obtain a degree at this institution, but I also took a "course in life".  I met many people and forged many friendships which still exist today, experienced much happiness, some sadness and disappointment, exerted much effort and dedication, suffered stress during exams, had internship experiences and lived the bohemian life of a student; in the end, I can say that they were four years full of emotions which in so few lines I cannot describe.
Even today, I still treasure my freshman year t-shirt which symbolised the beginning, camaraderie and group spirit; I still have my cape, which I used to proudly place on my shoulders, a symbol of academic spirit, equality and responsibility; and of course I have kept the top hat and cane, symbols of the end of academic life and the beginning of a new stage professional life. There are many stories and moments which are stored in my memory, and those are from the best years of my life; at this institution I became a nurse, and at this institution, I grew and matured as a MAN.

João Santos, May of 2007
1st course Nursing degree from ESSVA, 1999-2003

CESPU has provided me with the innumerable skills necessary for my development as a nurse, involving me all throughout the four years in a cohesive academic spirit which contributed to my personal development and taught me the values of friendship and companionship, which are essential to the development of teamwork, a very important element in our profession.
In retrospect, I remember all the moments I experienced at the institution, beginning with the first year when doubts and the desire to achieve something reigned supreme, until the last, when we do not know what to expect out there in the workforce, when we do not know what we are going to do. And naturally, one cannot forget all the hours spent studying, and the stress from the coursework in between.  I can say with certainty: "It was worth it!"
And now, I see the importance of the values which the school transmitted and the skills which their training provided me, and I can say with pride that I was a student at CESPU.

Pedro Neto, May of 2007
1st course Nursing degree from ESSVA, 1999-2003

Only 10 months have passed since completing my degree at the Escola Superior de Saúde de Vale do Ave (Vale do Ave Higher School of Health).  I recall, with pride and nostalgia, every moment from that phase of my life.
As a student, I sometimes felt that the professors were very demanding, but today I recognise, as a professional, that the expectation was absolutely necessary and indispensable to practising this profession with security, know-how, dedication and humanity.
I want to thank my nursing colleagues and professors for their presence and support in my development as a person and a professional.
Thank you very much.

Andreia Ribeiro

I write with the intention of giving testimony to a professional reality which is a part of me and which makes me proud.  I believe that higher education should include moments of sharing, development and learning with an entrepreneurial, dynamic and individualised spirit.
We have the opportunity to travel various paths, but there are some where the view and overall direction can lead to better results. Those on the right path feel that the journey is not finished in a book and nor is their degree finished on paper but continues on through interaction, research, commitment, assistance and the desire to be and exist.
